The Chiropractic Advantage
“What makes us human is the millisecond between stimulus and response.” Steven Covey, Principled-Centered Leadership
It’s great to be a human being. It is wonderful to be able to choose how you respond to what is going on around you. That is the essence of being alive. What is even more inspiring is that you can make a more complete decision or choice with an adjusted nervous system. This is the chiropractic advantage. Every physical and emotional experience of your life is integrated through your nervous system.
Think of your nervous system as your “glasses” to what is going on in and around you. It also processes this information and produces a response to what it sees. The production of the response is the millisecond that Steven Covey was referring to in his quote. The key is to make the response as whole as possible.
If those glasses are clean and you get a clear picture of what is going on around you, your response will be healthier and more complete. For example, have ever been driving on one of the first days of spring when the snow is really melting? If you have plenty of windshield washer fluid, you can see what is happening in traffic. It keeps you safe, it allows you to see if there is a pedestrian waiting to cross in front of you or if there is someone driving erratically.
Now, have you ever run out of washer fluid on just such a day? That is a very different experience. You might be able to see out one corner of the windshield, straining to make sure of the color of the traffic light or how close you are to the person in front of you. You are the one who ends up driving erratically. The same thing can happen to you and your body.
Your spine contains the most important parts of your nervous system.
The spine can be of great help or can interfere with your nervous system. When the spine is healthy your body can formulate a more complete response to what is going on around you. Your windshield washer fluid is full. If the spine puts tension or interference on it, it mucks up your ability to give your best possible response. Your windshield is a mess. Just how close is that car in front of you?
Get your spine checked so it enhances the performance of your nervous system. Get the chiropractic advantage at every level of your experience.
Question of the Month
I have trouble describing chiropractic to my family. Can you help?
Chiropractic can be described in two words: balance and tension. When the spine is balanced and the nervous system is under little tension, the entire body functions better. A subluxation or misalignment of your spine throws this relationship off. This puts tension on and interferes with your nervous system. The intelligent messages between the brain and the body do not pass clearly. This disrupts the ease at which your body works and you aren’t at your best. The purpose of chiropractic care is to look for and correct subluxations or misalignments of your spine to restore balance. This reduces the tension on the nervous system, improving the connection between your brain and body. The balance within you returns and you enjoy a higher quality of life.
Health News
Drug Wastes Pollute Water
From the not-so-good or yeech file comes this news. The first nationwide study of pharmaceutical pollution of U.S. rivers and streams offers an unsettling picture; waterways contaminated with antibiotics, steroids, synthetic hormones and other commonly used drugs. Read more at
http://www.msnbc.com/news/723140.asp. A quote by an official in the report states "We're not talking about rampant dumping. We're looking at the effect of normal existing usage for these different chemicals."
There are a number of things that could be drawn from this study. The first thing that comes to mind is how much of these drugs we, as a society, must be using. The presence of the drugs in the water comes not so much from dumping but from what is left after we use them and they pass through our bodies. It's like second hand smoke, just because you don't smoke doesn't mean you aren't affected. If these drugs are showing up in such high quantities, it's another indication to look differently at how we approach our health.

Office Happenings
1. Spring Training Week. During the week of April 22 to 26, we are offering existing patients the opportunity to get back into the swing of things with their health. Professional baseball players use spring training as fresh start or to improve on past accomplishments. Why not use our Spring Training Week to get your spine and nervous system in shape for the summer season. The computer scans on the nervous system are a great place to start. Scans performed during this week will be $15 (rather than $30) and that money will be donated to a local charity. So if you want a fresh start with your path to wellness or haven't had a scan in a while, give the
office a call and schedule a time.
2. Luck O' The Irish Day. Thanks to all those who participated in our special day for charity in our office. We raised $205 for the Breakfast Program at Fairview Elementary School. Give yourselves a pat on the back!
3. Our 24-Hour Relay Team. For the third year in a row, we are organizing a team to participate in the
Piper Creek Optimists 24 Hour Relay that raises funds for the youth of our community. We are looking for volunteers to walk, run or just move for one hour of the twenty-four and raise pledges for doing so. The event takes place on June 22 and 23. You can win prizes, have fun and be part of something good for the community.
Contact the office for more details.
4. Wellness Orientation Workshops (W.O.W.'s). The dates for upcoming classes are Wednesday April 3, Monday April 8, Wednesday April 17, Monday April 22 and Wednesday May 1. A great start for new patients and helpful for existing patients as well. They all start at 5:30 pm in the office and are presented by myself. See you there!
