"If I were asked to give what I consider the single most useful bit of advice for all humanity, it would he this: Expect trouble as an inevitable part of life and when it comes, hold your head high, look it squarely in the eye and say, 'I will be bigger than you. You cannot defeat me."

Seasons Greetings

As I was preparing this newsletter, I was stumped as to what to put in this part of it. I was hoping for something humorous to lighten the mood as the holiday season approaches. I would even have settled for something profound. Neither of those things happened.

This time of year is full of many different messages. It should be a time of joy and goodwill. It should a time of sharing and giving. A time where we think about and take care of each other. I think those are the important themes we should focus as we go through this season and the ones approaching.

I would like to wish each and every one of you a joyous and healthy holiday time and even greater things in the New Year. Merry Christmas!

Question of the Month

What can I do to keep myself healthy around the Holiday Season?

The Holiday Season can be very stressful. With all the shopping, Christmas parties, and friends and family to see, it takes a toll on your health and well-being. Although it may seem like you don’t have any opportunities to take care of yourself during such a busy time, it’s the best gift you can give yourself. Take time out of your hectic schedule and make sure you’re doing things to improve your health. That includes getting your spine and nervous system checked for interference or subluxations so you can fully enjoy your holidays.

Fitness Corner

Scott McDermott’s nifty newsletter has some great topics for the holiday season. A recipe for Uncle Scotty’s Pudding, the BEST fitness gift to give, a discussion of functional versus isolation exercises and some info on vaccinations are included. These topics and more make signing up for Scott’s free newsletter a no-brainer. To do so, send an email to mybestbody@shaw.ca and tell him to send you a copy.

Hidden Stress Underlies Heart Attacks

Stress you didn’t even know you had could kill you, report U.S. researchers. They found people whose blood pressure rose during “mental stress” were six times more likely to have a heart attack or other severe heart event within six years than people who handled the stress more calmly. Okay, I’m going on a rant here! The researcher indicated that this hidden rise in blood pressure was from the sympathetic nervous system and that they hope to find a gene responsible for it. WHAT!!! If the nervous system is involved, the easiest and most effective way to improve how it works is through the spine!! I have mentioned many times how you live your life through your nerves and that stress effects how well it performs. It’s not about some crazy gene that you respond poorly to “mental stress”, it’s probably because your spine isn’t doing its job!

A Little Hypertension May Sharpen Seniors' Thinking Skills

“Mild hypertension may actually protect the cognitive ability of people after age 70, claims an Israeli study. Dr. Michael A. Weber, an editor of the American Journal of Hypertension, which published the findings, says this study counters conventional medical science beliefs.” Read more:

Hmmmm. Maybe there is a healthy reason that blood pressure rises somewhat as we age. Could it be that the intelligence of the body raises blood pressure to help other functions in the body? Stay tuned for more information but I think we may be starting to understand that some diseases associated with aging may actually be helpful rather than harmful.
