Act Like a Champion

I am fortunate enough to be a part of the Pro Rodeo Sports Medicine Team. The team consists of athletic therapists, massage therapists and chiropractors who go to certain rodeos to provide help to professional cowboys and cowgirls. It takes me to events such as the Innisfail Rodeo and the Ponoka and Calgary Stampedes. It’s always interesting to work with these athletes. They put themselves through things that you don’t see every day in the office.

Another benefit of working with the team is you get to be around people who are the best in their fields. The athletic and massage therapists are very knowledgeable and experienced. They work with Olympic and professional athletes in many sports and teach their profession at the university and college level. The other people you work with that are at the top of their games are the cowboys and cowgirls. You can learn a lot by watching both groups and how they approach their work.

Being around the therapists, you see how professional, thorough and observant they are. I pick up something new each time I work with the team. I also learn a lot by watching who uses the services of the Pro Rodeo Sports Medicine Team. The service is free to all the cowboys and cowgirls but it is the champions of the sport who use the team the most.

These athletes have become the best in the world because they look after themselves. They come to see people like me before they get on their next bull or horse. They know the difference between a good ride and a great ride is very small and they want every advantage they can get. They know that a healthy spine and nervous system can make that difference.

Approach your health like a world champion. Work and build on your health while you have it rather than just dealing with symptoms. Be the best you can be every day and you will be surprised by the results.

Antibiotic use questioned on a number of fronts

There have been a number of interesting studies released in the last month that question the current use of antibiotics. The first study demonstrated that antibiotics are of no use for most bronchitis suffers who are otherwise healthy. http://msnbc.msn.com/id/8303665/.A second study reported that pink eye (conjunctivitis) does not respond to antibiotics. http://www.healthscout.com/news/1/526433/main.html. A third study revealed that treating childhood ear infections with antibiotics has no benefit when compared to doing nothing at all.

These papers bring up important points. The first one is that a healthy body can fight infections well on its own. The second point is that we could greatly reduce the amount of antibiotics being used with a wait-and-see approach. Superbugs and other antibiotic-resistance bacteria are a result of excess antibiotic use. As well, our immune systems would get their “work-outs” which keep them strong. Bottom line, get adjusted, eat well, get your rest and let the body do what it is designed to do.

Study: Vioxx and Celebrex were wildly over prescribed

Vioxx and Celebrex have been in the news a lot lately. They were pulled because of dangers of stroke and other cardiovascular incidents. This study shows that they were also over prescribed as well. Due to heavy promotion to physicians and the general public, people were using the drugs at much higher rates than they should have been. To read more:

Office Happenings

1. Insurance Changes. As of July 1st, it is now possible to use any secondary insurance coverage you may have before your Alberta Health Care Coverage runs out. What this means is that you can submit your statements for the $15 payments to your insurance companies and get reimbursed for them. This allows you to access your insurance coverage for chiropractic care much earlier than in years past.

2. Amazing Race Winners. I forgot to include the winners of our Amazing Race contest from our office. Eileen Styba won the 3 month membership to Body Basics, Joel MacNeill won the massage and adjustment package, Heather Plett won the 3 month supply of water and Gloria Hurst won the $50 gift certificate to The Runner’s Den. Congratulations to all the winners.

3. Office Closings. The office will be closed July 1 for Canada Day. On Thursday July 7 the office won't open until 3 pm as I will be attending a seminar until then. The office will also be closed at 10:30 am on Tuesday July 12 so that I can adjust some cowboys and cowgirls at the Calgary Stampede. We will also be closed on the morning of Wednesday July 20 for the Westerner Days parade. You are welcome to join us and sit in front of the office to watch the parade go by our front door.

4. Tour de France. We will have the office decorated and the Tour on during the month of July. You are welcome to stop by and watch Lance as he goes for number seven.

5. Wellness Orientation Workshops. The workshops for July are Monday July 11 and Wednesday July 27 at 5:30 pm in the office. They help you act like a champion when it comes to your health. We find the more people understand about their health and chiropractic care, the best results they get. Attend one in July.

6. Office Hours. There is no change in our office hours but here they are if you need them. Monday, Wednesday and Friday 8:00 to 12:30 and 2:00 to 5:30, Tuesday 8:00 to 12:30 and Thursday 1:00 to 7:30 pm.
