Becoming an Ironman
I am borrowing the title of this month’s article from a book with the same name. It’s wonderful and inspirational to read if you ever get the chance (we have it in our lending library). The book details the personal accounts of people who trained for, entered and did their best to finish their first Ironman race. For those of you who don’t know, the Ironman is a 2.4-mile swim followed directly by a 112- mile bike and then run a marathon (26.2 miles). And you have to do it in under 17 hours. Quite the challenge.
For these athletes, they chose to pursue a goal that would ask a lot of themselves and those around them. Hours and hours (years for some) of training, effort, dedication and discipline were required. In doing so, they became more than they ever could have imagined.
Notice that the title doesn’t say “Finishing My First Ironman” or “My Best Ironman Race”. It’s “Becoming an Ironman”. That what is was all about for these people. On the journey to get there, they learned so much about whom they are and their capabilities. Is there a goal out there that you could set that would give you the opportunity to “Become the World’s Greatest You”? What could you become by launching yourself in a direction that seems daunting yet thrilling?
Find something out there that allows you to explore your potential. Perhaps it is opening your own business, writing a book, going back to school or becoming the artist or athlete you never thought you could be. What were your dreams when you were a kid? What gives you goose bumps when you think about it? Become an Ironman in whatever you chose!
Question of the Month
Do you have any tips as the gardening season is upon us?
Warm weather and green grass is a beacon to gardeners far and wide. Whether you are a 'green thumb' or simply enjoy the outdoors, it is important to remember that yard work is just as taxing on your body as a workout at the gym. Stretching is a great place to start. Remember to target your sides, legs, shoulders, wrists and back. Using the proper tools for the job is also important to minimize the stress placed on the body. Don’t forget to take frequent breaks to keep things fresh. For more specific information on all of these tips, go

Worrisome ailment in medicine: Misleading journal articles
“Doctors and patients who rely on articles in prestigious medical journals for information about drugs have a problem. The articles don’t always tell the full story. Some omit key findings of trials about a drug’s safety and efficacy or inconvenient details about how a trial’s design changed partway through.” More:

Editors have “found themselves playing a game of research hide and seek” says the editor of the New England Journal of Medicine. So if one of the primary ways that we receive information about the drugs that get approved is false, it’s no wonder that drug reactions kill more people than car accidents.
