Choose

As we get ready to go to the polls for the third time this year, the concept of choice has been further stirred in my mind. In a democratic society, we get the opportunity to decide who will lead on a municipal, provincial and federal level. It is one of the most important choices we make as citizens. It is the fundamental cornerstone of a free society.

Unfortunately, when it comes to elections, most people choose not to choose. In Red Deer, voter turn out for the municipal election was somewhere around 25%. In other words, 3 out of 4 people who could vote didn’t. That is frightening. It reflects how when we are given the opportunity to make a difference, we don’t. That thinking also affects our health.

When we wake up in the morning, we choose to stay in bed or start our day. We choose to shower, brush our teeth or not. We could be happy and positive, or angry and negative. We could exercise or get the extra large double double with a Boston Crème thrown in for good measure. Ultimately it is up to us. Because we live in a free society, we choose at every level.

After you read this, choose to make a difference in your life and your health. Ordinary people achieve extra ordinary things because they chose to. Choose healthier habits, a more positive attitude and how you interact with the world around you. One more thing, please choose to vote!

Question of the Month

Is there more than one way to adjust the spine?

A common perception is that when people see a chiropractor, how he or she adjusts the spine will be the same. For most people, they think that a chiropractic adjustment involves popping noises and being moved around into different positions a lot. While this is true for some, there are other ways to approach the spine. Sometimes a hand held instrument delivers the adjustment or the table is used to help. These adjustments tend to be gentler and less forceful. There is a choice when it comes to adjusting style. If you would prefer a more traditional approach that option is available. However, other styles are also out there. If you are seeking care, just ask how the chiropractor adjusts the spine.

Flu season facts

As Americans pour over our borders to get the flu vaccine, lets take time to pull back and look at facts and issues around the flu. Here are some questions to consider. How often is the flu virus responsible for the fevers, sniffles and body aches we get? How many actual deaths per year are caused from the flu? How many flu viruses are there each year? For the answers and to read more: http://www.redflagsweekly.com/conferences/vaccines/2004_oct07.html

This is a great, well-researched and referenced article. Here is some information to help you consider objectively the headlines and sound bites we see and hear about the flu. Rather than viewing the flu with a Chicken Little, the-sky-is-falling approach, this gives a different perspective.

Office Happenings

1. Thank Goodness For Prosperity. On Friday November 19, we will be kicking off our Thank Goodness For Prosperity (T.G.F.P.) celebration. Again this year we are sponsoring a family through the Central Alberta Women’s Outreach Society who would not otherwise have the means to celebrate Christmas. From November 19 to December 3 we are asking patients to help us raise $400 to purchase gifts, food vouchers and decorations for this family. Join in the spirit of the season and make a difference in our community.

2. Christmas Specials. With the holiday season rapidly approaching, we will have special deals on some of the products we offer through the office. Starting November 15, receive $5 off the Pressure Point device and $5 off the neck wraps from Herbal Hugs. We may have the right gift for that hard to buy for person on your list.

3. Office Closing. The office will be closed on Thursday November 11 in honor of Remembrance Day and will be closed on Thursday November 25 to celebrate American Thanksgiving with my family.

4. Wellness Orientation Workshops. Do you have questions about chiropractic care? Do you want to introduce our office to a loved one? Here is a great opportunity to do that. Attend one of our Wellness Orientation Workshops. The dates are Wednesday November 10 and Monday November 22. They start at 5:30 pm here in the office. See you there.
